ATELIER NEWPORT’s fourth group exhibition, entitled Deciduous. The group show is inspired by Jennifer Day’s drawing Deciduous II, a ten-foot charcoal scroll depicting an ethereal barren tree, pendulously suspended from gnarled tree boughs. This exhibition explores the ephemeral nature of Autumn patterns, the stages of growth, and the cyclical nature of desquamation – or shedding – in the natural world.  Twelve artists, working in in a variety of media: drawings, sculpture, and reclaimed materials including twigs, charcoal, and fiber, prompt the viewer to reflect on the complex geometry repeated in the natural world, and the viewer’s relationship to it.

Other works include Bunny Harvey’s Darter’s Path, a painting depicting a dragonfly’s fleeting presence in nature; emerging artist Maria Helene Verglas’ egg tempera, Atlas Moth, illustrates the complex details of a specimen. Kathryn Fund’s three-dimensional twig wall-relief sculptures, and Kevin Ledwell’s leaf photograph Chinese Lantern, each seek to capture impermanence, and to make clear subtle patterns.
