ATELIER NEWPORT's summer show. entitled Divided Mind, a group exhibition, attempts to explore the spirit of the current times with an emphasis on divisiveness. A Divided Mind is present in many areas of our current culture. Divisiveness is apparent in our geopolitical polar views, in our daily debates and throughout our country's public marches. A divisiveness laid most bare in our fight for racial inequality where this divide is evident in our views with no obvious end in sight. A dividedness most raw in the recount of post traumatic memories told by countless women, unearthing generations of age-old tactics embedded in many industries. Evidence of a culture vying for power with no value in equality nor sustainability. All of this done in an attempt to have a proper seat at the table, and a respectful dialogue in the hope of cooperation, a safe community, a fair work environment, and transparency.
Scholars have long maintained that each era has a unique spirit, a nature or climate that sets it apart from all other epochs. In German, such a spirit is known as "Zeitgeist," from the German words Zeit, meaning "time," and Geist, meaning "spirit" or "ghost. Will ours be a divided mind?
Twenty-three artists, working in a variety of media, explore a Divided Mind. This exhibition attempts to investigate this zeitgeist; what is withheld, what is decorated, disguised, or objectified.
