ALL IS CHANGE - SELECTED WORK

A Solo Exhibition Mary Dondero

Atelier Newport presents a mid-September exhibition featuring a solo exhibition by Mary Dondero, titled All is Change. Dondero’s new body of work is inspired by Greek philosopher Heraclitus, and his meditation on change: “You cannot step into the same river twice, for other waters are continually flowing”; This statement is an analogy for his belief that everything is constantly changing. This idea, that the water and life within a river are always changing, even if the river looks the same, can be applied to life in general. People are never the same, changing in some way from our day-to-day experiences, and same with society.* In her own words, Dondero states: “The irrepressible strength, continual motion and shifting energy of the ocean is often the inspiration for my work. I am fascinated by how what seems to be fixed, or stable is actually in a state of flux. This concept of an oscillating and ever-changing reality prompted me to think of Heraclitus’ claim that a man never steps into the same river twice. Although the works in this exhibit were influenced by these thoughts, they were created to fulfill my own creative impulse while immersing myself in fabricated and imagined myths - all on my own terms. It is a self-indulgent and isolating process. When I’m done, the art object has a life of its own.” -Mary Dondero
