Renee Levin, born in New York City and raised primarily in New Jersey, received her Fine Arts degree at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. There she was awarded the Paul Robeson Emerging Young Artist award upon graduating. She also studied art at the College of FIne Arts at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. After graduating, Levin worked as a designer and then art director at a New York City design firm for 12 years. Simultaneously, she felt a need to fill her fine art void and did so with painting. She eventually moved back to coastal New Jersey where she now resides with her husband and two children. Painting has become her exclusive focus, gaining a quick following and respect from the local community and galleries alike. Levin is constantly inspired by her very regular adventures at the beach and in nature.She is best known for her mmodern depiction of coastal objects and primarily paints in large format using oil. Her recognizabe style of juxtapositions combined with a monochromatic palette allows Levin to showcase her minimal and modern aesthetic. These juxtapositions iinclude the use of extreme contrasts - pairing dark with light, dramatic shadows with bright glimmers, grit with softness and realism with graphic elements. She carefully considers her composition which results in dynamic use of negative space, as well as movement, almost playful at times. Levin's coastal roots and deep connection to nature ground her creativity and allow her to celebrate these natural objects - their beauty, fluidity and unpredictability - in her work.
