THE WEIGHT OF UNTOLD TALES - SELECTED WORK

January 23– March 7, 2021

The Weight of Untold Tales, a group exhibition, features Ko Smith, Robin Crocker, Jemison Faust, Karen Yank, Gayle Mandle and Richard Nocera. Together, these artists weave a visual tapestry of storytelling expressed through the language of mixed media, sculpture, and painting. Fragile in nature, and poetic in language, these elegiac inspired works speak to the fragility of human beings during these times. Layers of theory, history, collected detritus, data; a small section of America’s long history, coded, embedded in original letters, and expressed through poetry. This exhibit attempts to heal, emote and reveal our fragile nature, and our fragile place now marked in history.

“The root of the paintings in this series lies in the tension of an internal moment, in which we as individuals have the opportunity to expand our worldview, mental and emotional boundaries. These paintings recognize that such an expansion is not always easy, but is always a task worth engaging in.” - Ko Smith /Partisan Series

“If we may gleam a silver lining from a deeply troubling political landscape, it is that in such times the power and importance of art is elevated. Art becomes vital, a space for introspection and self-actualization to those grown weary in a national discourse full of symbolic hyperbole. Art as resistance is a central pillar of our long and great American creative tradition. The works of Ko Smith in Partisan are a direct call to the viewer to participate in this space of introspection. A sense of what has always made America strong and beautiful if offered boldly- that amidst our different world views, a common human understanding is waiting for our attention.” - Austin Veldman, Editor-in-chief, Twyckenham Notes
