Definition of wanderlust: strong longing for or impulse toward wandering

ATELIER NEWPORT’s eleventh group exhibition, entitled
Wanderlust, a group exhibit named for and inspired by Christopher Pendergast’s featured 10-foot painting, explores our nature impulse and longing toward wandering. Wanderlust, reflects an urge for self-development by experiencing the unknown, confronting unforeseen challenges, getting to know unfamiliar cultures, ways of life and behaviors driven by the desire to escape. “For my part, writes Robert Louis Stevenson in Travels with a Donkey, “I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” Those with “wanderlust” do not necessarily need to go anywhere in particular; they just do not care to stay in one spot. The etymology of wanderlust is a very simple one. “Wanderlust” is lust (or “desire”) for wandering. The word comes from German, in which wandern means “to wander,” and Lust means “desire.” This exhibition will feature objects, sculpture and painting by sixteen artists whom explore this concept or the idea of lust.
