“Over the last decade while our lives were becoming increasingly complex, digitized, and branded my paintings were becoming simpler, rawer and more intuitive. Though shapes and colors have dramatically distilled, contrast has remained a constant. I am interested in the clarity of opposites, how they meet and determine each other - black/white, rough/smooth, pain/joy.
I work mainly on large un-stretched linen or paper laid on the floor which adds physicality and a lack of control to the process. I appreciate how the accident foils any plan, unceremoniously rerouting any vision.
There is relief in simplification and the growing scale of my paintings work to amplify the power of less. Sometimes I paint to find a temporary panacea for the craziness that is our modern lives and times. Sometimes I paint as a small personal rebellion against it. On a good day I manage to do both.”
